Brentford have confirmed they have referred a bizarre incident that occurred during last weekend's Premier League encounter with Liverpool to the police. The west Londoners were beaten 2-1 by the Reds at the Gtech Community Stadium, with goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak proving decisive in the second half after Keane Lewis-Potter's opener in the 44th minute.
Video footage captures rugby ball kicked from balcony
Video footage circulating across social media appears to capture a man kicking a rugby ball from a balcony overlooking the ground during the match, which then landed inside the stadium below. A separate clip shows an individual carrying a rugby ball away from the pitch, accompanied by the caption: "Wrong sport mate," delivered with a degree of sarcasm.
Brentford have now confirmed the matter has been referred to the police, citing the "dangerous and potentially harmful" nature of the behaviour.
Club statement confirms police involvement
An official club statement issued on Monday read: "Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday's match against Liverpool. Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.
"The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.
"The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken."
League standings and upcoming fixtures
It comes as Brentford have made an impressive start to the campaign, sitting sixth in the Premier League table with two wins, four draws and just a single defeat from their opening seven fixtures. Liverpool, meanwhile, occupy fifth place, one position above Keith Andrews' side, having accumulated three wins and three draws.
However, the demands of Champions League football pose a significant challenge for Andoni Iraola's squad as they look to mount a sustained domestic title challenge this term. The Reds face Villarreal on Tuesday night before hosting a resurgent Brighton side on Sunday, with the Seagulls currently sitting in third place following an outstanding start to the new campaign.
Liverpool are also dealing with a string of injury problems, leaving their squad worryingly thin in certain areas. Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with an Achilles tendon rupture suffered towards the end of last season, while both Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni continue their respective recoveries from knee injuries.
