Fowey in Cornwall has been named the best value destination for an autumn staycation, according to research from credit card company Zable. The quaint harbour town offers a mix of history, scenery and cosy pubs, making it an ideal spot for a weekend away as the seasons change.
Historic harbour town
The town sits on the banks of the river Fowey and dates back to the medieval age. Its natural deep water harbour made it an important historical port and trading centre through the ages, and the streets are lined with beautiful Victorian and Edwardian buildings. The surrounding area is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Walks and local attractions
For those looking to explore beyond the town, the creeks and coves walk is a four mile circular route that includes two ferries across the river. It takes two to three hours including ferry transfers and showcases stunning woodlands and coastal paths, which are particularly scenic at this time of year.
Within the town itself, Fore Street serves as the main high street, with winding alleys and a bustling selection of independent shops and boutiques. Visitors can stop at Jo Downes Handmade Glass for locally blown glass art works, or Heather Jane and Co., which displays art from 180 local makers.
A cosy end to the day
To finish the day, the Ship Inn on Trafalgar Square offers a historic setting, having been built in 1570. It features a massive open fire, providing a fitting spot for a cosy autumn pint.
