Two trains transporting tourists to and from Machu Picchu collided on Tuesday, December 30, leaving one person dead and more than 30 injured. The fatality was a railroad worker.
The UK Foreign Office has confirmed it is providing support to several British nationals involved in the crash. A statement said: "We are supporting a number of British nationals involved in a train collision near Machu Picchu, Peru, and are in contact with the local authorities."
The collision occurred near Qoriwayrachina, also an archaeological site, when a train returning from Machu Picchu hit a train travelling towards the site. Railway services along the line connecting Machu Picchu with Cuzco have been suspended.
Videos on local media showed train carriages with broken windows and dented sides stuck along the rail line. The area sees around 1.5 million visitors annually, with tourism sometimes affected by political unrest and protests.
