Tragic Death of British Pensioner in Thailand After Rip Current Incident
A 75-year-old British pensioner has died after being swept out to sea by a rip current while swimming in Thailand. The incident occurred in the coastal city of Hua Hin, where the man was on holiday with his Thai girlfriend.
Helpless Witness from the Shore
The pensioner found himself caught in deep waves as his Thai girlfriend watched helplessly from the beach. He was unable to swim back to shore in the choppy waters, and his body was later discovered by a fisherman close to a pier at around 4.30pm local time on Wednesday.
Police Captain Prasong Jaturat, deputy inspector at the Hua Hin station, provided details about the man's background. He stated that the pensioner had travelled to Thailand alone, having been widowed previously. 'His family is in England, and his wife has passed away, so he lives with his children,' Captain Jaturat said.
Routine Morning Swim Turns Deadly
The man had been staying in Kalasin province with his Thai girlfriend before they travelled to Hua Hin together. They arrived on April 6 and were due to return on April 20. Since their arrival, he had been swimming alone every morning at the same location, where conditions were typically calm.
However, on the day of the incident, the waves were strong, and no one else was swimming. He entered the water near the mouth of the bay, in a ferry channel used by vessels travelling to Chonburi. This area is particularly deep due to dredging for large boats, making it hazardous.
Dangerous Conditions and Investigation
It is believed the pensioner may have been caught in a rip current and pulled under by the waves. The British man's body was taken to Hua Hin Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has been contacted for comment regarding this tragic event. This incident highlights the risks associated with swimming in unfamiliar waters, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Authorities in Thailand are reminding tourists to exercise caution and heed local warnings when engaging in water activities. The loss of this British pensioner serves as a sombre reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea.
