The British expat community in Spain is mourning the tragic loss of 43-year-old Samantha Thomas, a mother who died in a horrific speedboat accident while swimming near Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when Samantha was enjoying a swim in the sea near the popular tourist destination. According to local reports, she was struck by the propeller of a speedboat in what authorities are describing as a devastating accident.
Emergency Response and Hospital Battle
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving multiple distress calls. Paramedics performed CPR on Samantha at the water's edge before transporting her to Torrevieja University Hospital.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the mother-of-one was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Spanish Civil Guard has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Community in Mourning
Friends and neighbours have expressed their shock and devastation at the news. Samantha, who had been living in Spain for several years, was described as a "loving mother" and "vibrant member of the community."
One neighbour told local media: "We're all completely heartbroken. She was such a wonderful person and devoted mother. This is every family's worst nightmare when on holiday."
Foreign Office Support
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson confirmed: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of water safety during summer holidays, particularly in popular coastal destinations where multiple watercraft operate.
