Blackpool Sands in South Devon has been named one of the UK's best autumn beaches by outdoor specialists Millets, ranking fifth in a study of ten top locations. The beach scored 8.06 out of 10, praised for its facilities, picturesque setting, and favourable autumn weather conditions including average temperatures, sunshine, and rainfall.
However, despite its high rating and name suggesting sandy shores, the beach is actually composed of shingle – a fact that has led to disappointment among some visitors. TripAdvisor reviews frequently mention the sharp pebbles, with one guest warning: 'Don't be fooled by the name it's not sandy just shingles. We drove a long way to visit here and was so disappointed.' Another described the shingle as 'unforgiving' underfoot.
Millets' hiking enthusiast Natalie Wolfenden noted that autumn is the 'perfect time to enjoy long walks along the coast away from the summer crowds'. The shingle becomes less problematic during colder months when visitors typically wear robust walking boots. The beach's golden shingle and evergreen backdrop take on a wild, striking character in autumn.
Blackpool Sands offers a range of amenities including ample parking, a cafe-restaurant, and a takeaway kiosk. A wooden beach sauna is available for hire year-round, providing a warm reward after swimming. The South West Coast Path runs alongside, offering a 3.2-mile circular route to Strete with stunning views of the coastline and Start Point lighthouse.
