A British pilgrim has died after falling into the Robo River in Puente la Reina, northern Spain. The 64-year-old man is believed to have lost his balance while attempting to cross an improvised bridge made of tree trunks near his hotel.
His body was discovered early this morning by a local who alerted the police. Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical teams, attended the scene but could not revive him. It is thought the man's body may have lain undiscovered for several hours after he failed to arrive at his booked accommodation.
The incident occurred near Hotel Jake, on the outskirts of Puente la Reina towards Pamplona. Police are investigating, but sources indicate the death is being treated as a tragic accident. The bridge was described as about 10 feet high and makeshift.
Puente la Reina lies along the famous Way of St James pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. In a similar tragedy in September 2019, Irish pilgrim Timothy Kelleher, 35, drowned after swimming in treacherous waters at Finisterre, a common extension of the pilgrimage.
