The Beatles Story, a Liverpool attraction that has welcomed millions of visitors to the Royal Albert Dock since May 1990, is set to close its waterfront home after 38 years and relocate to a larger city-centre venue.
The award-winning attraction will move to the former St Johns Market site inside St Johns Shopping Centre, directly opposite Liverpool Lime Street station. The new venue spans 100,000 square feet, making it more than four times the size of its current location.
New Yellow Submarine Attraction Planned
A Beatles-themed viewing experience is also planned for the iconic St John’s Beacon, featuring a Yellow Submarine-themed attraction with panoramic views across Liverpool. The development aims to build on The Beatles Story’s reputation as a major visitor destination celebrating the lives, music and legacy of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
History and Impact
The attraction was developed by husband-and-wife team Mike and Bernadette Byrne, who began working on the concept in 1987 after being inspired by a Beatles attraction in America. They spent two years researching and creating the immersive experience, which opened at the developing Albert Dock waterfront.
The Beatles Story has earned numerous awards and welcomed more than four million visitors by its 25th anniversary, with its contribution to the city’s visitor economy estimated at £300 million. It offers audio guides in 12 languages narrated by Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister, as well as educational facilities, Fab4 Cafés and Fab4 Stores across its Royal Albert Dock and Pier Head locations.
