A Canadian plane passenger has captured dramatic footage of a heated encounter with an older traveller who aggressively kicked and shoved her seat in response to her reclining it slightly. The incident, involving content creator Ameera Jauniaux, occurred on an Air France flight earlier this month, reigniting the perennial debate over seat etiquette in crowded cabins.
Viral Video Sparks Widespread Controversy
The young flyer, known as @ameejau on TikTok, documented the moment she attempted to get comfortable by reclining her seat a small amount. Almost immediately, an older woman seated behind her reacted violently, slamming Ameera's seat repeatedly in an effort to force it back upright, before throwing her hands up in visible frustration.
The video, which has since amassed over 13 million views, was accompanied by a playful caption reading: 'Worst plane ride...' Referencing the song 'House' by Charli xcx and John Cale, Jauniaux jokingly added, 'I think I'm gonna die in this house', before zooming in on the woman's angry expression with her camera.
Flight Attendants Intervene Multiple Times
In a follow-up video, Jauniaux, who claimed she had only reclined her seat 'a tiny bit', can be seen repeatedly turning to the woman to request she stop her behaviour, before calling on a flight attendant for assistance. According to the passenger, cabin crew stepped in five times to diffuse the situation, yet the woman allegedly continued to shove the chair throughout the flight.
Jauniaux noted that she was not upgraded or offered a different seat elsewhere, and did not receive a refund for her unpleasant journey, highlighting potential gaps in airline customer service protocols.
Online Reactions Deeply Divided
Thousands of responses poured in from divided TikTok users, with some condemning the woman's 'unhinged' behaviour while others called out Jauniaux for the 'disrespectful' move. One person quizzed: 'Do people not realise plane seats only recline like two inches? They’re acting like you’re laying in her lap.' Another jokingly added: 'Let me guess - you DARED to recline the chair that was designed to recline.'
One commenter, claiming to be cabin crew, advised: 'As a flight attendant please call me for this. This is the drama I live to get people removed from the flight for. Everybody has the right to recline especially if it’s not mealtime!' However, another user refuted: 'To be honest, I’m on the lady’s side. I HATE sitting behind someone who reclines their chair. It gives me less room, I can’t work on the tray, and I can’t sleep. I will NEVER recline an airplane seat out of respect.'
Broader Implications for Air Travel
Agreeing with the critical stance, another wrote: 'Hot take: seats should not recline in economy. It’s already a tin can already. Having to lose space because someone in front of you reclined is honestly the worst.' One person, taking a more neutral stance, said: 'I absolute loathe when people recline. We are already sardines don’t make it worse! But that being said, this ladies reaction was unhinged. You can’t kick and punch the seat in front. You could ask nicely for them to go back to upright and if they don’t then that’s it.'
Another chimed in: 'As someone who hates when people recline their chairs, this is INSANE! The seats are meant to recline, people PAID for their seats they can do whatever they want!' The incident underscores ongoing tensions in air travel, where limited space often leads to conflicts over personal comfort versus shared courtesy.
Daily Mail has contacted Air France for comment, but as of now, no official statement has been released regarding the altercation or the airline's policies on seat reclining disputes.
