Swiss ‘Wellness Hostel’ Offers Five-Spa Experience for Budget Travellers

A youth hostel in the Swiss alpine village of Saas-Fee has opened with jacuzzis, herbal steam baths and hydromassage facilities, claiming to be the world’s first 'wellness hostel'. The WellnessHostel 4000 retains traditional dormitories and bunk beds but replaces typical hostel entertainment with hot tubs and a tapas bar.

Manager Denise Emmerich said the hostel has attracted a mix of guests, including ski teams, older people, and young groups seeking cheap accommodation. 'When you go to a hostel you expect it – how can I say it? – to not be anything like a hotel. But we have fitness and wellness facilities, a swimming pool, as well as a pool table and ping pong table,' she explained.

Other amenities include a Finnish sauna, hydromassage showers, and an extensive massage programme. Emmerich described the hostel as 'quite a relaxing place', noting its quiet location in a car-free village with mountain views and access to skiing.

Prices start at around 50 francs (£30) per bed, offering a cheaper alternative to nearby resorts like Verbier and St Moritz, which were ranked the second and third most expensive ski destinations for Brits in 2012. The hostel is part of a growing trend of upmarket hostels, including converted monasteries and 'flashpacker pads'.
