Zara's wide-legged trousers, priced at £25.99, have earned the nickname 'death pants' on social media due to a series of viral videos showing wearers tripping, falling, and sustaining injuries. The flowing, voluminous fabric is blamed for causing accidents, including broken bones, facial cuts, and escalator incidents.
Viral Videos Highlight Dangers
Influencer Jessica Pearce posted a TikTok video showing herself face-planting on a gravel driveway, captioning it: 'The Zara trousers are going to be the death of you.' Camila Ribera Roca from Bolivia shared a video of herself tripping on a pavement while wearing the trousers, revealing a cut arm to over a million viewers, set to Mozart's Lacrimosa. Ellin Costa from Canada told CBC News: 'These pants almost killed me,' after breaking her wrist and cutting her face. Another user, Morgana, suffered a broken phone and grazed knee; her post garnered 2.3 million views.
Escalator Incidents Add to Peril
One woman's hem got caught in an escalator's teeth, pulling the trousers down to her thighs. The 'Zara death pants' trend has prompted numerous videos of people tripping and reporting bruises, leading to the deadly label. Stylist Clare Chambers told Metro: 'The wider the leg, the more likely it is to get caught and wrapped around the opposite leg/foot causing the wearer to trip and fall.'
Zara Remains Silent
Zara has not responded to requests for comment. Some TikTok users suggest wearing hairbands around the ankles or high heels to reduce risk, though stilettos pose their own hazards. The trousers remain on sale, and the trend continues to spread across social media platforms.
