Liverpool transfer target Yan Diomande has sidestepped questions about his future but made clear his admiration for Germany star Florian Wirtz ahead of their World Cup clash. The Ivory Coast winger, who is the subject of intense interest from the Reds, says he is focused on continuing his "amazing year" by performing on the global stage.
Liverpool's Pursuit Heats Up
The Reds have been locked in negotiations with RB Leipzig over Diomande for weeks and have now made it known they are prepared to commit to a package worth up to £86 million for the 19-year-old. However, Leipzig are determined to keep the player they signed from Leganes last year and want to tie him down to a new contract that would likely include a release clause. The Bundesliga side may be tempted to sell if the offer reaches closer to £112 million, but Diomande insists his focus remains on the World Cup.
Diomande's World Cup Focus
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Ivory Coast's Group E match against Germany, Diomande said: "It's a dream. Representing your country is something huge. Participating in the AFCON was already an important achievement for me, but being selected for a World Cup is another level. This has been an amazing year for me. I'm grateful for everything that's happening to me and I'm just going to continue to give my best on the pitch."
Praise for Germany and Wirtz
The attacker, who plays his club football in Germany, had high praise for the opposition. "When you play in Germany, you quickly see that everything there is very structured. Discipline is very important, punctuality, intensity in training. I learned a lot as a result, both on and off the pitch. Germany is a very strong team; they never give up and fight until the end. Add to that their individual quality. That makes them very strong. Florian Wirtz, for example, is a very creative player who finds solutions in the final third, even in tight spaces. Players like that can change a game with a single action."
Ivory Coast Coach Dismisses Transfer Talk
Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae made clear that the squad's focus is solely on the World Cup. "We are in the bubble of the national team. I don't want to talk about transfer situations or players' personal files," Fae said.
Kimmich's Assessment
Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who is expected to start for Germany, offered his own analysis of Diomande. "A year ago, hardly anyone knew him. He's had an outstanding season, even though RB Leipzig had a few problems. His dribbling is exceptional, a bit like Kingsley Coman at Bayern back in the day. He's got incredible pace. But there we have to prepare for. They have spectacular attacking players."
Ivory Coast face Germany on Saturday in Toronto, with Diomande expected to play a key role for his side.
