WhatsApp has announced a major upgrade for voice and video calls, bringing five new features to users worldwide. The Meta-owned chat app says the updates aim to make calls smarter, smoother, and more secure.
Web Calling and Call Transfer
The headline feature is Web Calling, which allows users to make and receive one-to-one and group voice or video calls directly through WhatsApp Web without needing to download the desktop app. WhatsApp explained: "Whether you're a college student on a shared computer, using a work laptop that doesn't allow app downloads, or simply prefer your browser, you can jump on a call without leaving the browser you're already on." Web users will also get screen sharing, emoji reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab.
Another feature is Call Transfer, which enables switching an active group call between devices without disconnecting. Users can start a call on their smartphone and seamlessly move it to a laptop or desktop.
Waiting Room and Audio-Video Enhancements
WhatsApp is also introducing a Waiting Room feature for group calls. When creating a call link, hosts can enable "Require approval to join," placing participants in a virtual waiting room until the host lets them in. WhatsApp said: "We've introduced Waiting Room. When you create a WhatsApp call link with 'Require approval to join' enabled, participants will enter a waiting room until you're ready to let them in."
Two features aim to improve call quality: QuickHD delivers high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call, and Noise Suppression reduces background sounds to make voices clearer. Noise Suppression can be turned on or off from in-call settings.
Rollout
WhatsApp says all five features are now rolling out and will be available to users worldwide soon.
