Jaissle hints Burn and Osula close to Newcastle starts

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has suggested that Dan Burn is nearing a return to the starting line-up after two substitute appearances, while William Osula may need more time before being restored to the first XI.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace, Jaissle confirmed that both players took part in an extra fitness session immediately after the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday night, as preparations for Selhurst Park began at once.

Burn closing in on starting role

Burn was used as an emergency centre-forward late in the game against Villa, but Jaissle made clear the defender is close to returning to his natural position. The German coach said Burn is "getting fitter and fitter" and that the physical work is paying off.

"He is getting the physical back, which is really important for him," Jaissle said. "He was quite long out, but he is getting better and better physical wise. Hopefully, soon we can see him again in his natural position."

Jaissle added that the decision to play Burn up front was tactical, saying: "I think people are smart enough to know this was a tactical approach for the additional time. We went all in and in that occasion, I'm aware he is a centre-back, so don't doubt that."

Osula managed carefully after long absence

Osula, who has also been sidelined, took part in the same running session but Jaissle indicated he will be handled cautiously. "William Osula is getting back slowly but surely," he said.

"We must consider that Will has been out a long time. We need to be smart now with the load management; we don't want to miss them again."

The head coach struck a positive tone overall, adding: "It is getting better and that helps us for sure. Especially getting senior players, as it gives us the stability, we had that against Villa with Joelinton... Things are looking a little bit brighter now."
