Virgin Media has slashed the price of its fastest broadband plan to a record low, offering Gig1 Fibre Broadband for just £26.99 per month. This works out at approximately 87p per day and represents a saving of £72 over the 24-month contract compared to the usual £29.99 monthly rate. According to Virgin Media, this is the lowest ever price for its Gig1 plan.
Blazing-Fast Speeds for Less
The Gig1 Fibre Broadband delivers speeds up to 1,130Mbps, allowing users to download a feature-length HD film in under 30 seconds or a 50GB PS5 game in less than seven minutes. In contrast, households with 70Mbps speeds would take over 90 minutes for the same game. The connection ensures smooth streaming and online gaming, reports the Express.
Price Increases and Availability
However, the discounted rate is not locked in for the full term. Virgin Media has confirmed that the price will rise twice during the contract: to £30.99 from April 2027 and to £34.99 from April 2028. Additionally, the 1,130Mbps speeds are not available to all UK households; customers should check availability via Virgin's postcode checker.
Comparison with Competitors
Virgin's deal undercuts key rivals. Sky offers a comparable 900Mbps plan at £28 per month, while BT charges £37.99 for 900Mbps. Both are more expensive and slower than Virgin's Gig1. Alternative network providers, or alt-nets, are also emerging across the UK, often offering competitive prices. For instance, Community Fibre provides 1Gbps speeds for £25 per month with the first three months free and a price freeze for the contract duration, but it is only available in London and select southeast locations.
Is 1Gbps Right for You?
Not every household requires such high speeds. A couple streaming Netflix in a flat may manage well with 100Mbps. Larger households with remote work, film downloads, and online gaming should consider at least 300Mbps. A broadband connection is like a road: heavier traffic slows everything down. Virgin's 1Gbps fibre is akin to having a motorway directly into your living room.
