A German company, Collins Aerospace, has unveiled a new seat design called SkyNook that aims to make the last row of an aircraft a more desirable place to sit. The design was presented at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.
The SkyNook features a privacy divider and an extra console that can be used as a table, bassinet, or pet carrier. This transforms the often-underutilised space at the rear of twin-aisle planes, where the fuselage narrows and rows typically have two seats instead of three.
According to Collins Aerospace, the privacy divider not only provides seclusion but also dampens sounds from the galley and toilets. The design is intended to improve the travel experience for passengers with babies, pets, or sensory considerations.
Jefferey McKee, a director at Collins Aerospace, said: 'Our team of cabin experience designers are persistent in their dedication to iterating and reimagining cabin solutions that leverage every square inch of space to improve air travel for passengers, airlines and crew members. SkyNook exemplifies this commitment, transforming a frequently overlooked area into a serene retreat.'
The SkyNook has won a Crystal Cabin Award, the company's 16th in the programme's 20-year history. Collins Aerospace anticipates that the first customer will have the SkyNook installed by the end of the year.
