The UK is heading into another heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. While this is ideal for sunbathing or hosting a World Cup barbecue, it could be disastrous for broadband speeds. The cause is the router, which, like any tech device, can overheat and slow down or shut down completely.
Virgin Media, a UK internet service provider, warned: "Although we test our Hubs carefully at a range of temperatures, they are better off out of bright sunlight, just like your phone or laptop. If the Hub gets too hot, it could slow down your connection or even grind to a halt."
Why Heat Affects Your Router
Routers are electronic devices that generate heat during operation. When exposed to direct sunlight or high ambient temperatures, they can exceed their safe operating limits. This can cause the processor to throttle performance to reduce heat, leading to slower speeds, or trigger an automatic shutdown to prevent damage.
If your router is in a warm room but not in direct sunlight, it should function normally, as most models are built to cope with typical summer conditions. However, placing it on a windowsill or in direct sunlight can cause it to overheat.
Tips for Optimal Router Placement
Virgin Media advises against hiding the router in enclosed spaces. "Good placement of the Hub could also mean greater WiFi reach," the company said. "Don't stick the Hub in a cupboard or hidden behind your TV either."
- Keep routers at least one metre away from cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens, as these can interfere with Wi-Fi signals.
- Place the router off the floor and as central in the home as possible to maximise coverage.
- Avoid placing the router near fish tanks, as water absorbs Wi-Fi signals.
What to Do If Your Router Overheats
If your router has been in direct sunlight and is running slowly or has shut down, move it to a cooler, shaded location. Allow it to cool down before restarting. Following these simple steps should help keep your broadband running smoothly during the warmer weather.
