PS6 faces bigger threats than lack of physical games

The PlayStation 6 faces significant challenges beyond the lack of physical game support, with its ultimate success depending on factors such as price, launch titles, and hardware capabilities. While Sony's move to an all-digital future has sparked outrage among enthusiasts, industry observers argue that other issues may prove more decisive.

Price concerns dominate

Although not confirmed, the PlayStation 6 is expected to cost around £1,000, driven by ongoing global memory shortages that have inflated hardware costs. Sony has indicated it will not sell the console at a significant loss, making it more expensive than the PlayStation 5, which currently starts at £520. Even dedicated gamers may balk at such a price for what is likely to be a marginal performance increase over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

Launch exclusives and cross-gen dilemma

Enticing exclusive games could justify the cost, but the high price tag makes it a tough sell for only one or two major titles. Sony faces a dilemma: releasing games as cross-gen titles to maximize sales reduces incentive to upgrade, while exclusive-only releases risk a slow start. Building the PS6's library gradually could prolong PS5 support, further hurting the new console's adoption.

Hardware differentiation and handheld rumors

Rumors suggest Sony is developing a handheld device, possibly hinted at by CEO Hideaki Nishino's talk of a seamless experience beyond the living room. A dedicated handheld could be a smart move given the success of Nintendo's Switch, but a hybrid powerful enough to natively run PS5 games seems technically challenging. Reports indicate the handheld may be a separate device with lower resolution and frame rates, potentially linked to a power saver mode added to the PS5. However, it is unlikely to be cheaper than the home console.

Sony's abandonment of physical media may partly aim to reduce manufacturing costs by omitting the disc drive. Yet the real threat to the PS6's success is an inflated price that the console cannot justify. The same challenges affect all high-end consoles and gaming PCs, suggesting the industry may have hit a ceiling that Sony and Microsoft have no clear plan to overcome.
