Newcastle Reject Arsenal's Approach for Guimaraes
Newcastle United have made it clear that Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale, rejecting a verbal approach from Arsenal for the Brazilian midfielder. The club considers the 28-year-old 'priceless', according to manager Eddie Howe, who is determined to retain his captain amid mounting interest from the Gunners.
Guimaraes' representatives are reported to have held discussions with both clubs, but Newcastle are confident enough to plan a fresh contract for the player. However, they are also preparing a backup plan in case of a departure, having already sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham in a £100 million deal.
Backup Plans: Felix Nmecha and Lamine Camara
Newcastle have held discussions regarding Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, who is also a target for Manchester United. The Bundesliga club has placed a valuation of over £100 million on Nmecha, who has an admirer in Red Devils director of football Jason Wilcox — a key figure during Nmecha's 14-year stint at Manchester City's academy.
Monaco's Lamine Camara had also been on Newcastle's wishlist, though that pursuit now appears to have stalled. Newcastle should nonetheless retain considerable financial firepower following the departures of both Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer.
Guimaraes' Impact at Newcastle
Guimaraes arrived at Newcastle in January 2022 for £40 million, despite Arsenal showing interest. The Brazilian's transfer represented the second occasion the Gunners had been pipped to the post for the Brazil international, after Lyon secured his signature two years prior.
The Magpies' acquisition demonstrated greater determination, which resonated with the player's representatives during a World Cup year. "Newcastle arrived and they got serious. Bruno couldn't wait another six months to decide his future in a World Cup year," he said.
Guimaraes has featured in 195 matches since his arrival at St James' Park and played a pivotal role as Newcastle secured their first major domestic silverware in 70 years by claiming the Carabao Cup. The midfielder is regarded as one of Tyneside's most passionate characters on the field.
New Signing: Bazoumana Toure
Newcastle are set to confirm their first outfield addition of the summer with the arrival of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim. The 20-year-old winger scored five goals and registered 12 assists last season and is expected to immediately challenge for a place in Magpies' strongest XI.
