Sarah Platt has been found not guilty of the murder of Theo Silverton in Coronation Street, with the verdict delivered during Monday's (October 19) episode of the ITV soap.
The character, played by Tina O'Brien, had been on trial after striking Theo with a metal pole, causing him to fall to his death. She had turned herself in last week after struggling to keep the secret and allowing someone else to be imprisoned for her actions.
The Trial
Proceedings began poorly for Sarah, as DS Lisa Connor-Swain's (Vicky Myers) statement inadvertently worsened her situation, while Theo's ex Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson) spoke in his defence.
The following day, everything hinged on Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), who was extremely anxious when he entered the witness box as he needed to recount the abusive relationship he endured with Theo. Due to his nerves, Todd stumbled over his words repeatedly and didn't manage to assist Sarah very effectively.
After originally declining to attend court, Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) had a change of heart and chose to take the stand in an attempt to support his former girlfriend. Although Kit held nothing back when expressing his true feelings about Sarah to the jury, he was careful to make clear that he does not consider her capable of committing murder.
The Verdict
During Monday's episode, the jury delivered their verdict, announcing that Sarah had been found not guilty.
Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to react to the outcome. One wrote: "An obvious verdict. Obvious to me anyway. Strange time during the programme to announce it, thought it might have been a cliffhanger at the end. #corrie." Another added: "Shortest trial ever. Quickest verdict ever." Someone else said: "Wow they've reached a verdict quick."
A fourth viewer moaned: "Waste of time making Sarah the killer." A fifth social media user agreed: "Of course our Sarah Lou is found 'not guilty' there's no way she was gonna go down for this #Corrie."
What's Next for Sarah
Back on the cobbles, a relieved and elated Sarah turned her focus to her relationship with Kit, hoping he would give their romance another chance, but the officer made it plain that the moment had passed.
What Kit neglected to reveal is that he had slept with Sarah's daughter Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) while she was in custody. Adding to the mounting secrets, Bethany is yet to inform either of them that she is expecting Kit's baby.
Fans will need to tune in to find out what lies ahead as Sarah adjusts to life back outside prison. Coronation Street airs weeknights on ITV1 at 8.30pm and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX.
