Netflix's The Altruists: First Look at FTX Drama

Netflix has released a first look at its upcoming limited series The Altruists, a modern-day thriller based on the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The eight-part series stars Julia Garner, known for Ozark, and Anthony Boyle from House of Guinness. It is set to premiere on November 19.

Star-Studded Cast and Real-Life Figures

Anthony Boyle plays Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX and the cryptocurrency trading firm Alameda Research. Julia Garner portrays Caroline Ellison, his business partner and girlfriend. Both were in charge when FTX collapsed in November 2022, and it was found that Alameda had violated the use of FTX customer funds.

The cast also includes Alex Lawther as Sam Trabucco, co-CEO of Alameda Research, and Matt Rife as Ryan Salame, CEO of FTX Digital Markets. Hudson Williams, known for Heated Rivalry, will appear as Duncan Rheingans-Yoo.

Netflix's Announcement and Fan Reactions

Netflix teased the series on X, formerly Twitter, writing: "Here's your first look at The Altruists, starring Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle." The post continued: "Two hyper-smart idealists race to rebuke the global finance market - then get accused of stealing $8 billion and become Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde... Coming to Netflix 19 November."

Boyle shared a photo of himself as Bankman-Fried on Instagram, showing a clean-shaven face and curly hair. Fans reacted with humor and excitement. One commented, "I’ll watch this for that hair alone. I hope this is all about your hair," while another noted, "It is kinda weird to see him in something that is not a period drama actually." Fans also expressed enthusiasm for Hudson Williams's role, with one saying, "I'm so sat for this! Can't wait to see Hudson in it."

Background and Impact

FTX was founded in 2019 and became one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally. Just three years later, the company collapsed, with billions of dollars in customer funds reportedly missing. Both Bankman-Fried and Ellison were eventually convicted on various counts of wire and securities fraud, as well as money laundering. The Altruists is scheduled to stream on Netflix starting November 19.
