Infinity Ward has released a new 10-minute developer diary for Modern Warfare 4, showcasing gameplay changes that have excited the Call of Duty community. The fifth episode of "From The Ward" focuses on weapons, offering around two minutes of new footage highlighting key multiplayer alterations.
Bloom Removed, Spray Patterns Introduced
The most significant change is the removal of bloom from hipfire. In previous Call of Duty games and other shooters like Battlefield and Apex Legends, bloom added randomness to bullet spread. In Modern Warfare 4, bullets always go exactly where the weapon is aimed, introducing memorisable spray patterns for each gun. This raises the skill ceiling and makes laser sights far more effective, with players comparing the system to Counter-Strike.
Improved Enemy Visibility
Infinity Ward has also addressed enemy player visibility. Visual effects such as muzzle flashes and depth of field are now masked out around iron sights, providing a clearer view of opponents while firing. This change aims to make encounters more consistent and less cluttered.
Apex Attachments and Grounded Experience
The developer diary also showcased "Apex Attachments," powerful unlocks at the end of weapon progression tracks. Examples include a collection of throwing knives under the barrel, a laser-guided missile, a three-shot "fan the hammer" firing mode for a revolver, and a heartbeat sensor that reveals enemies not on the minimap. These additions support the push for a more grounded military experience, though some fans remain skeptical about long-term cosmetic direction.
Fan Reactions
Fans have responded positively to the gameplay reveal. One YouTube comment stated: "This is giving off HEAVY MW19 vibes which makes me super happy!" Another added: "Infinity Ward literally sets the bar in the industry for gun design, sound design, and animations." A third comment read: "Attention to detail is top notch here. Keep it up!"
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. A deeper dive is expected at an event in August or September.
