Man Utd Midfield Rebuild: Carrick Role in Santos Deal, Tielemans Twist

Manchester United have made significant progress in their midfield rebuild, with manager Michael Carrick playing a key role in securing a £50 million deal for Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Meanwhile, the club has triggered a £35 million release clause for Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans, casting doubt on a previously agreed move for Atalanta's Ederson.

Carrick's Influence Secures Santos

Andrey Santos, 22, completed a £50 million move from Premier League rivals Chelsea after making 43 appearances for them last season. The Brazil international cited Carrick's influence as a major factor in his decision to join United. “Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented,” Santos told United's club website. “As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick, he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams.”

Santos added: “Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here. I know just how strong the squad is and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies.”

Tielemans Twist and Ederson Deal on Hold

United are nearing a shock move for Aston Villa and Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans, who recently captained his country to the World Cup quarter-finals. Tielemans has spent three years at Villa, helping them finish fourth in the Premier League and win the Europa League last season. His contract runs until 2028 but contains a £35 million release clause, which United have triggered.

The pursuit of Tielemans has put the Ederson deal on hold. United had agreed a £35 million fee plus £3.8 million in add-ons with Atalanta, but the Brazilian midfielder failed a medical due to a knee issue after a late World Cup call-up. The transfer could be revisited if United renegotiate the price with Atalanta, but Tielemans' arrival adds further uncertainty.

Midfield Overhaul Continues

United identified central midfield as a priority after Casemiro left at the end of last season and Manuel Ugarte suffered an injury during the World Cup. Carrick, a former United midfielder, is reshaping the squad with Santos and Tielemans set to provide Premier League experience and depth.
