Liverpool have dispatched scouts to the World Cup to watch 18-year-old Australian centre-back Lucas Herrington, who is also attracting interest from Barcelona. The Colorado Rapids defender has impressed in MLS this season, earning a spot in Australia's 26-man squad for the tournament.
Liverpool's Scouting Mission
According to Metro, Liverpool have sent scouts to the USA, Canada and Mexico to monitor Herrington, having tracked him earlier this season. The Reds face stiff competition, as The Athletic reports that Barcelona have already had an opening bid turned down by Colorado.
Herrington's Rise
Herrington joined Colorado from Brisbane Roar and has quickly made an impact in MLS. His composure and skill have drawn praise from Rapids president Padraig Smith, who said earlier this year: "He is an exceptionally talented young man with the world at his feet. When our scouts identified him, and we began the recruitment process, we knew he had a high ceiling."
Ex-Arsenal defender Rob Holding added: "He's super composed, super relaxed, on the ball, under pressure. He's a really good player. He just keeps getting better and better each week."
Herrington's Focus
Speaking about his future, Herrington said: "I just want to keep enjoying it, taking it day by day. I'm not really thinking too far in the future. It's just Colorado, and now just focusing on the World Cup. That's where my focus is at the moment; we'll see what happens after that. But loving my football in Colorado, and we'll see what happens."
World Cup Debut Possible
Herrington could make his World Cup debut next week when Australia faces Paraguay. A win would secure a spot in the last 32, while anything less could leave them waiting nervously.
