GTA 6 PC Port Delay Explained by Former Rockstar Producer
GTA 6 PC Port Delay Explained by Ex-Rockstar Producer

Former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio has shed light on why Grand Theft Auto 6 will not launch on PC simultaneously with consoles, confirming that the decision stems from development priorities and technical constraints rather than neglect of PC gamers.

Console-First Development Strategy

Ricchio, who worked as a producer on Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne, and GTA 5, explained during the Kiwi Talkz gaming podcast that Rockstar deliberately starts development on consoles to ensure optimal performance. He noted that building a game for fixed hardware constraints prevents the complications that arise when scaling down from PC.

“Most of the time you take what you’ve got, and that’s a lot of times why people love developing initially on PC, and then porting over: ‘Before ship, we’ll get everything onto console’,” Ricchio said. He added that this approach “causes so [many] problems down at the end. So you’re much better off starting with the constraints.”

Historical Precedent: GTA 5 PC Delay

Rockstar’s track record supports this strategy. GTA 5 launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September 2013, but the PC version did not arrive until April 2015—a gap of 19 months. The PC port of Red Dead Redemption took even longer, arriving 14 years after the console original.

“It’s way harder to make your game performant than it is to just be like: ‘Oh, we’ve got extra room, cool, we can de-optimize some things or make them more shiny,’” Ricchio said, emphasizing that optimizing for lower-spec hardware from the outset yields better results.

Resource Allocation and PC Commitment

Ricchio clarified that Rockstar does value PC players, but resource allocation is a key factor. “It’s not even that we don’t care about PC,” he said. “It was just like, ‘is it worth spending time getting a PC port going versus working on GTA 5?’” This trade-off often leads to PC versions being deprioritized during the initial launch window.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously reinforced this philosophy, stating in early 2026: “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you're judged by serving the core. Like, really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn't there, if they're not served first and best, you kind of don't hit your other consumers.”

Uncertain Timeline for PC Release

Rockstar has not officially confirmed a PC version of GTA 6, though industry expectations point to a port arriving several months after the console launch. The gap could mirror GTA 5’s 18-month wait or potentially be shorter, as development practices have evolved. Players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be the first to experience the game, while PC gamers must wait for further announcements.
