A new rumour suggests Capcom is working on a remake of the original Devil May Cry, with development reportedly 'pretty far along' as the series approaches its 25th anniversary. The claim comes from X user MajorPlayeix, who previously accurately predicted a Switch 2 port of Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Insider Claims Remake Is in Development
In a post on X, MajorPlayeix wrote: 'Let's be blunt about it. You're getting a DMC1 Remake. Yes. Just like those rumours said.' A follow-up post added: 'Hearing it's pretty far along actually but I'll have to see for myself before making any release/trailer date bets.' The leaker stated the remake is being built in Capcom's proprietary RE Engine, suggesting a substantial graphical overhaul rather than a simple remaster.
Franchise Context and Recent Success
Devil May Cry 5 launched in 2019 and has sold nearly 13 million copies, with sales boosted by the Netflix animated series. Despite this success, Capcom has not announced a new mainline entry since. The departure of long-time series director Hideaki Itsuno in 2024 may have impacted plans, but two years have passed without any official reveal.
25th Anniversary and Potential Reveal Window
The franchise will celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 23, 2026. This falls just three days before Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 26, where Capcom has a strong relationship with host Geoff Keighley. Capcom has already confirmed a significant presence at Gamescom, with playable demos of Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen and Mega Man: Dual Override. However, companies are inconsistent with anniversary celebrations, so nothing is guaranteed.
Capcom's Remake Track Record
Capcom has found success with Resident Evil remakes, making a Devil May Cry remake a logical next step. Interestingly, Devil May Cry was originally conceived as a concept for Resident Evil 4 before evolving into its own franchise. The leaker also claimed a new Ace Attorney game is coming this year, a rumour echoed by other sources.
What to Expect
While the rumour remains unconfirmed, Capcom's future slate already includes Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and Mega Man: Dual Override. A Devil May Cry remake would align with the company's strategy of reviving classic IPs. Fans will have to wait for an official announcement, potentially at Gamescom 2026.
