Chelsea have dismissed speculation that Xabi Alonso is planning a reunion with Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirtz this summer. Sources close to the west London club have rubbished reports that the Blues are 'keeping tabs' on the former Bayer Leverkusen star.
Background on Wirtz and Alonso
Alonso worked alongside Wirtz during their successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, with the pair winning the Bundesliga title together in 2024. Wirtz's outstanding performances under Alonso earned him a £116 million transfer to Liverpool last summer. However, the 23-year-old's debut season at Anfield did not go entirely to plan, as he managed seven goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.
Transfer Speculation Dismissed
With Alonso landing his first Premier League role at Chelsea, conjecture about a potential reunion with Wirtz has been unavoidable. A report on the BBC Sport website on Sunday claimed Chelsea were 'keeping tabs' on Wirtz and could make a move depending on what unfolds with Enzo Fernandez this summer. However, when Football London put that to a source close to Chelsea, it was dismissed.
Chelsea's Transfer Plans
The source added that Chelsea are pursuing at least two starting players to bolster Alonso's squad ahead of the 44-year-old's first season at Stamford Bridge. While several players have been linked with the west Londoners in recent weeks, the report claims there is no substance to rumours surrounding John Stones, Ethan Nwaneri, Lucas Bergvall, or Wirtz.
