Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has issued a clear transfer statement, insisting the club need more signings despite recent additions. The Red Devils have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye, and reports suggest Liverpool have stepped away from a deal, boosting United's chances.
Carrick demands more squad depth
United have not made any major signings since bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans a month ago as part of a midfield rebuild. Experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow and several young prospects have also arrived, but Carrick says more is needed to challenge for major honours.
"We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that," he said. "Money's money, I get that."
"We feel like we have to be pushing for everything we're involved in, while being realistic of what the recent history's looked like over a period of time. For now, we've got to make the most of it, but we've got to push every boundary we can to be able to win again, basically. That's the challenge."
Mbaye pursuit boosted
United have received a boost in their pursuit of Mbaye as Liverpool have reportedly decided to cool their interest in the PSG winger. The Merseyside club are targeting wide players following Mohamed Salah's departure and are working on a move for Mbaye's teammate Bradley Barcola.
Liverpool have reportedly stepped away from a possible deal for Mbaye due to his £42.7m price tag. The teenager faces limited first-team opportunities at PSG, given the number of forwards at their disposal.
In a further boost to United, PSG have agreed to sign Ferran Torres from Barcelona for around the same fee, potentially making a deal for Mbaye more likely. Spanish publication AS claims that several other clubs, including Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Aston Villa, have also made enquiries about Mbaye, who scored three goals in 29 games last term.
