At least 15 people lost their lives and 10 others sustained injuries after a truck transporting iron rods and numerous passengers overturned on a major highway in central Bangladesh early Monday morning. The tragic incident occurred around 5am local time in the Soratoil area of Tangail district, approximately 83 kilometres northwest of the capital, Dhaka.
Details of the Crash
According to local police chief Fuad Hossain, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The truck was carrying hitchhiking passengers and was en route from Dhaka to the northern region. Many travellers were beginning their journeys ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which falls on Thursday. All 15 victims died at the scene, Hossain confirmed.
Road Safety Concerns
Road accidents claim thousands of lives annually in Bangladesh, a South Asian nation with a population exceeding 170 million. The high death toll is attributed to lax enforcement of traffic regulations, poor road conditions, and unskilled driving. The incident highlights the ongoing safety challenges faced by commuters, especially during holiday periods when travel volumes increase significantly.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, and the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The tragedy has once again sparked calls for stricter road safety measures and better infrastructure to prevent such incidents in the future.
