Arsenal have reached an agreement with Club Brugge to sign Christos Tzolis for approximately £33m, according to Standard Sport. The 24-year-old Greek winger is set to bolster Mikel Arteta's attacking options, but the deal is not expected to hinder the club's pursuit of higher-profile targets such as Morgan Rogers or Bradley Barcola.
Why Arsenal are signing Tzolis
Tzolis was named Belgian Pro League Player of the Season after netting 22 goals and providing 29 assists in all competitions last term. He has scored over 20 goals in both of his seasons in Belgium, following an impressive loan spell at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Despite a previous unsuccessful stint at Norwich City, where he failed to score in 14 Premier League appearances during the 2021-22 season, Tzolis has developed significantly since then.
His versatility appeals to Arteta, having played primarily on the left wing but also featuring on the right and through the middle for Brugge. Arteta values players who add unpredictability to his squad. The signing is also seen as a straightforward deal compared to potential moves for Rogers or Barcola.
Impact on existing targets
Arsenal retain interest in more high-profile names. The Tzolis acquisition does not affect the club's ability to make a marquee signing alongside him. The Gunners have already sold Leandro Trossard to Besiktas, and Tzolis is viewed as a direct replacement. He offers more pace than Trossard, is seven years younger, and provides a similar two-footed threat with a proven goal-scoring record in Belgium.
Financial perspective
A fee of £33m in the current market is not considered a huge risk. It fills the gap left by Trossard's departure while leaving Arsenal with both squad space and funds to pursue a statement signing. According to sources, the move could prove smart business if Tzolis can replicate his Belgian form in the Premier League.
