A trip to JJ's Ices, an ice cream drive-thru in St Helens founded by Jordan Edwards, saw a 10-minute wait despite viral videos showing long queues, with two sundaes costing £11.50, though hot desserts were off the menu due to van issues.
Drive-Thru Concept Draws Visitors
Jordan Edwards, from Haydock, created JJ's Ices after leaving his studies in the USA and returning home to "find his true calling". He has amassed over 2 million followers across his platforms, posting customer interactions, his latest ice cream creations, and long lines of customers eager to try his delicacies.
His regular posts show a modern twist on the classic ice cream van, with a menu of flavour combinations that has kept fans hooked since he started the business in 2023. The selection includes hot desserts, an ideal substitute for the autumn weather.
Surprisingly Quick Service
Despite anticipating a long wait based on the videos, only four cars were ahead upon arrival. The location could handle the number of cars shown online, and at one point recently it proved so popular there was an extra van in place so two cars could be served at once. Despite what the videos suggested, service was completed within 10 minutes.
However, no hot desserts were on offer as the van was having issues, something that would have been known earlier had the social media page been checked. Aside from this, customers could stay in the warmth of the car, with a menu handed through the window offering a huge selection of ice cream combinations.
Menu and Cost
The selection included classic blue and red sherbert with raspberry sauce sundaes, sprinkles and Oreo crumbs for chocolate lovers, to ice cream trays for sharing or enjoying alone with Vimto-flavoured sauce and turtle jelly sweets, not forgetting the classic '99 cone.
The reviewer opted for the classic sherbert, which was not lacking in toppings or sauce, with every bite full of flavour, while a friend went for a chocolatey combination of cookies and Nutella. Overall, both sundaes cost £11.50, a price for two ice creams that most would find high, but given the experience and the amount of toppings, a return visit was considered to branch out and try a hot dessert.
The drive-thru is located at Topps Tiles, St Helens WA9 1JZ, open from 7pm to 9pm Wednesday to Sunday.
