Woolworths has come under fire from customers over new anti-theft gates being trialled in several stores. Shoppers have raised concerns that the low-height bars could trap individuals or injure children.
At the Bass Hill store in Sydney, customer Maria said the gates were at a height that could hit children in prams. She remarked that entering without hitting a child would require going in backwards. Another shopper, Susan, feared getting stuck in the gates.
The gates consist of two sets of bars that push in one direction and spring back. Parents worry children may grab the bars and be struck. The trial is also in place at Camberwell in Melbourne, where gates have been installed since late last year.
Online backlash has been significant, with Reddit users commenting that the gates are at toddler face height and make people feel like livestock. Concerns were also raised for disabled customers.
A Woolworths spokesperson said they are reviewing feedback as they assess the trial, noting that theft is a driver of violence towards staff. Other retailers like IGA, Spotlight and Drakes have similar gates.
