M6 remains shut after fatal crash as resurfacing continues

The M6 northbound remains closed between junction 23 Newton-le-Willows and junction 24 Ashton-in-Makerfield more than 24 hours after a fatal crash involving a van and a lorry. National Highways has said there is currently no estimated time for the motorway to reopen.

Crash details and closure timeline

The collision happened at around 9.55pm on Sunday (October 18). Police confirmed that the van driver, 41-year-old Vadim Suflet, died following the crash. One vehicle caught fire, causing major road surface damage and a large fuel spillage, meaning emergency resurfacing is needed.

The southbound carriageway reopened on Monday morning, but the northbound side will remain shut because lanes one to three need full resurfacing and lane four must stay closed for safety until works are finished. The closure will remain in place throughout Monday night.

Diversion route for drivers

Drivers are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion via the A580 and A58. National Highways has not provided an estimated time for the road to reopen while the emergency resurfacing work continues.
