Robert Cort Properties has announced plans to build a 40,000 square foot Tesco superstore on the outskirts of Devizes, a historic market town in Wiltshire. The development, located off Horton Road, would also include a drive-through Starbucks and a DIY store, creating between 75 and 80 new jobs.
Retail Development Details
The proposed superstore would offer a full range of services typical of larger Tesco branches, including an in-store bakery, health and beauty section, clothing, cash machines, click and collect, and home delivery. The site is described as a "parkland setting" with natural lakes and landscaped features.
Reading-based Robert Cort Properties previously secured planning permission on appeal for a business park on the same site. However, after that scheme failed to gain traction, the retail development was put forward instead. An online consultation has already been held, and residents can view the plans in person at Devizes Corn Exchange on July 7 between 1pm and 7.30pm, with developers present to answer questions. A formal planning application is expected to be submitted in September.
Local Context and Expansion
Devizes currently has only a Tesco Express store, though the proposed site is near land reportedly earmarked for a £10 million Aldi store and a drive-through coffee shop. Tesco has been expanding its Express store network, aiming to open 70 new Express stores by March next year, building on 60 openings in 2025.
Nick Johnson, Tesco group property director, said: "As we grow our store network we're delighted to have the opportunity to serve even more people, in even more communities."
