Tesco has announced it may close some stores early on Sunday if England reaches the World Cup final against Spain. The change would affect Express stores, which would shut at 7:30pm instead of their usual 10pm or 11pm closing time.
Reason for the Change
The retailer said the early closure is to allow Express store colleagues to get home in time for the 8pm kick-off. Large stores will not be affected as they are already closed by that time on Sundays.
What Shoppers Can Expect
Express stores will remain open during the day on Sunday, so shoppers can purchase essentials until 7:30pm. Tesco also confirmed that customers needing last-minute items can use Whoosh delivery service until 11pm. All online Grocery Home Shopping orders placed for Sunday evening will be delivered as normal.
Kevin Tindall, Managing Director of Tesco's UK Operations, said: "We appreciate just how much this would mean to so many of our colleagues, so if England makes it through to the final, we will close our Express stores across England in time for all colleagues to be able to celebrate with their family and friends."
If England Does Not Reach the Final
Tesco stated that if England fails to reach the final, Express stores will operate at their usual opening and closing times.
