Tesco Doubles Clubcard Points on Gift Cards for December
Tesco doubles Clubcard points on gift cards

Tesco has unveiled a major festive boost for its popular loyalty scheme, announcing it will double the Clubcard points customers can earn on gift card purchases throughout December.

How the Double Points Promotion Works

The supermarket giant, which boasts an impressive 24 million Clubcard members, is temporarily enhancing its rewards structure. Normally, shoppers receive one point for every £1 spent. However, for the entire month of December, this rate will jump to two points for every £1 spent on gift cards.

Critically, the promotion applies to all third-party gift cards sold in Tesco stores, not just Tesco-branded vouchers. This means customers buying gift cards for a wide range of other retailers and experiences can benefit. The double points will be added to shoppers' Clubcard accounts automatically after purchase.

A Festive 'Win-Win' for Shoppers

Ban Mahsoub, Partnerships Director at Tesco Insurance and Money Services, highlighted the timing of the offer. "We all know the challenge of finding the perfect Christmas gift," Mahsoub said. "With two points for every £1 spent on gift cards, you can be confident you’re giving something they’ll love, and you’ll get a little something back for yourself too. It’s a win-win."

The promotion is designed to incentivise gift card sales during the peak Christmas shopping period, offering customers added value while they complete their present lists.

Understanding Tesco Clubcard Points

For context, here is how Clubcard points are typically accrued across different purchases:

  • One point for every £1 spent on groceries in stores and online.
  • One point for every two litres of fuel purchased at a Tesco petrol station.
  • One point for every £1 spent with Tesco Mobile.
  • One point for every £4 spent using a Tesco credit card.
  • One point for every £1 spent using a Tesco Clubcard Pay+ debit card.

Savers need a minimum of 150 points to obtain a Clubcard voucher, which is worth £1.50 to spend in Tesco. The December promotion effectively halves the spending required to reach a voucher when purchasing gift cards.

This announcement follows recent money-saving tips shared by bargain hunter Jordon Cox, known as the 'Coupon King' on ITV's This Morning. Cox revealed a 'secret code' on Clubcard Price items: a six-digit number starting with '25' which, when read in reverse blocks of two, indicates the deal's expiry date (day, month, year). This allows savvy shoppers to plan their purchases and avoid paying full price.
