A couple from Colne, Lancashire, have won a staggering £61,708,231 in the EuroMillions draw on 30 January, but initially believed they had only won £2.60. Richard and Debbie Nuttall, both 54, were on holiday in Fuerteventura celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary when they discovered their life-changing win.
Mr Nuttall, an accountant, said he saw an email from the National Lottery stating there was 'exciting news about your ticket'. He checked his account and saw the balance had increased by £2.60, telling his wife they could have a bacon butty with that. It was only later that day, after a second email, that he realised the true amount.
The couple described the moment of realisation as 'surreal', with Mr Nuttall saying they were 'jumping up and down in our car seats, punching the air, thumping the dashboard'. They have since made modest purchases: Mrs Nuttall, an office administrator, bought new bedding and an expensive hairdryer, while her husband purchased golf clubs and a golf bag.
The Nuttalls plan to share their fortune with family and friends and support BK's Heroes, a charity close to their hearts founded by Mrs Nuttall's late cousin Ben King, which raises awareness and funds research into brain cancer and kidney disease. Mr Nuttall said: 'We will have nicer things and do nicer things but we will still be the same people.'
The other winning EuroMillions ticket, which claimed the remaining half of the £123m jackpot, was purchased in Spain. Andy Carter from the National Lottery described the win as 'absolutely incredible news'.
