Target Opens Six New Stores, Plans Major Expansion

Target has taken another step closer to its goal of 30 additional locations by the end of the year by opening six new stores across the country. The six stores that opened Sunday are located in Buckeye and Casa Grande, Arizona; University City, Missouri; Myrtle Grove and Selma, North Carolina; and Jersey City, New Jersey.

Five of the six newly opened stores exceed Target's typical 125,000-square-foot format, with the St. Louis location reaching about 149,000 square feet. The bigger layouts allow for expanded product selection, larger grocery areas and improved online order fulfillment and same-day pickup services, according to the company.

The expansion comes as the Minnesota-based retailer aims to add over 300 new stores by 2035. With its 2,000th store recently opened, Target says it already has a location within 10 miles of most U.S. households. The next phase of expansion includes 48 communities across 28 states. Texas will see the most growth with six new stores, followed by Florida with five and Utah with four. The expansion is part of a $5 billion capital investment plan focused on new stores, remodels and tech upgrades.

“We're taking this approach to categories like baby, home, food and beverage, and beauty, repositioning our assortment and our floor plans to bring newness to all 2,000 stores this year,” Target CEO Michael Fiddelke recently told investors, according to The Sun.
