In a taste test of three supermarket own-brand instant coffees, Sainsbury's Gold Roast emerged as the favourite, scoring 3.5 out of 5. The Co-op's Fairtrade gold roast scored 2.5, while Morrisons was rated the worst at 1.5.
Taste Test Details
The test was carried out by Isobel Pankhurst, who typically drinks her coffee black without milk or sugar. She compared Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and the Co-op own-brand options against her usual choice, Costa Instant Smooth Medium Roast.
The Co-op's coffee, priced at £3.30 for 100g, was described as slightly too bitter, though it was noted as a relatively affordable option with Fairtrade certification. Morrisons, at £2.65 for 200g, was the cheapest but had a burnt taste and a strange aftertaste.
Sainsbury's Takes the Lead
Sainsbury's, at £2.85 for 200g, was praised for having the right level of bitterness to be drunk black and for being the best-smelling of the three. It was 20p more expensive than Morrisons but cheaper than the Co-op option.
Despite the results, Pankhurst said she will not be giving up her Costa coffee, which remains her overall favourite but costs over £7 for 100g. For a budget-friendly alternative, she recommended the Sainsbury's Gold Roast.
