Supermarket Hummus Taste Test: Lidl, Morrisons, Co-op Compared
Supermarket Hummus Taste Test: Lidl, Morrisons, Co-op

Hummus is a wonderfully versatile food choice, whether served as part of a main meal or enjoyed as a quick snack. And while homemade hummus is undeniably tasty, it's often far more convenient to simply grab a tub during your weekly supermarket run.

Virtually every supermarket stocks its own range, from a straightforward classic recipe to varieties featuring jalapeño or caramelised onions. As a devoted hummus enthusiast, I decided to put a selection of supermarket hummus tubs to the test to establish which reigns supreme.

Picking up options from Lidl, Morrisons, and the Co-op, I also purchased Ramona's hummus to see how these would compare to my favourite option.

Ramona's

Before embarking on my taste test, Ramona's was already my preferred supermarket hummus, and while there are other worthy contenders, it firmly retains its top spot. That said, at £3.50 it's hardly the most budget-friendly option on the shelf.

While you may need to splash out a little more, Ramona's Hummus boasts just that bit more flavour than its supermarket rivals, particularly when stacked up against the array of plain hummus alternatives on offer.

Alongside their plain 'heavenly hummus', Ramona's also offers jalapeno, red pepper, and beetroot options for those looking for something a little extra.

Morrisons

At £1.49, Morrisons' classic hummus is certainly a more affordable alternative to Ramona's; however, it is still pricier than Lidl's offering, which I personally found to be quite noticeably superior. Morrisons' hummus was rather bland and undoubtedly one of the weaker options I've sampled.

While I might pick it up again in a pinch if Morrisons happened to be my only nearby option, it's certainly not one I'd make a special trip for — and even if I found myself in Morrisons, I'd likely reach for a different brand instead.

Lidl

Lidl's hummus was the most wallet-friendly of the bunch at just 95p, and although it wasn't the finest on offer, it was certainly worth every penny. It packed more flavour than the Morrisons version, though it fell just short of matching Ramona's or Co-op's offerings.

While not quite the most flavoursome, Lidl's hummus was impressively smooth, making it an excellent companion for carrot sticks.

Co-op

For my money, Co-op came out on top among the own-brand hummus contenders, though it still didn't quite reach the heights of Ramona's. Priced at £1.40, it was considerably more affordable and is absolutely one I'll be popping into my basket again.

Bursting with flavour, the hummus was wonderfully smooth while maintaining just the right thickness — perfect for dipping carrots, cucumbers, breadsticks, or whatever else takes your fancy.
