While the economic climate remains frothy, Starbucks is pushing ahead with its popular Red Cup Day, offering customers a free reusable festive cup. This annual tradition continues despite the company facing significant financial headwands and concurrent industrial action from its staff.
What is Starbucks Red Cup Day?
Red Cup Day is a longstanding holiday tradition that began in 1997 to celebrate the start of the festive season. The Seattle-based coffee giant started giving away free reusable cups for the occasion in 2018. This year's design was created by Yvonne Chan, who stated, "The design is inspired by the little moment of magic you feel when you step into a Starbucks from the cold outside."
To secure one of these limited-edition cups, customers must purchase a handcrafted holiday beverage from the special menu. The company has confirmed that the cups are only available while supplies last, urging eager customers to act quickly.
Economic Challenges and Industrial Action
The continuation of this free giveaway is surprising given the substantial economic turmoil Starbucks has endured this year. The company's stock has fallen more than 16 percent in the last year, reflecting a difficult period for the coffee chain.
In September, Starbucks was forced to shutter over 400 locations after reporting six consecutive quarters of sales declines. As part of a sweeping $1 billion restructuring plan, the company also laid off 900 workers, marking its second round of mass layoffs this year.
Chief executive Brian Niccol, a turnaround specialist brought in to revitalise the brand, described the cutbacks as 'necessary to build a better, stronger and more resilient Starbucks.' He has focused on enhancing the in-store experience, with dining areas now featuring printed newspapers, simplified menu options, and hot coffee served in mugs.
However, these corporate struggles have been compounded by labour disputes. More than 1,000 unionised baristas in over 40 US cities launched an open-ended strike, strategically timed to coincide with one of the busiest days of the year—Red Cup Day. The Starbucks Workers United union organised the walkout, which began at 65 stores, intensifying their push for a collective bargaining agreement over pay and benefits.
Despite the timing, a company spokesperson reported minimal impact from the walkouts, with less than 1 percent of stores experiencing any level of disruption.
