Sephora Makes Historic Debut on Irish Soil with Belfast Store Launch
Beauty enthusiasts and retail analysts have enthusiastically welcomed the landmark opening of the first Sephora store on the island of Ireland, describing it as a "fantastic" development for the region. The highly anticipated launch took place in Belfast's Victoria Square shopping centre, marking Sephora's first new UK store opening in 2026 and its thirteenth overall in the country.
Queues and Celebrations Mark Momentous Opening Day
Shoppers began gathering hours before the scheduled 1pm opening time on Thursday morning, with queues stretching around Victoria Square and bringing the shopping centre nearly to a standstill. Estimates suggest approximately 1,800 people attended the opening event, with visitors traveling from across Ireland to witness the historic retail moment.
The celebration featured special guests including Belfast Lord Mayor Tracy Kelly, content creators Annalivia McGivern, Billykiss Azeez and Kayleigh Trappe, and Harley Street dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting from nearby Donaghadee in County Down. Cool FM presenter and stylist Rebecca McKinney provided entertainment for the waiting crowd, while traditional local snacks including yellow man honeycomb were distributed to those in line.
In a festive pre-opening display, Sephora staff performed dances in front of the store before joining special guests for the final countdown and ceremonial ribbon cutting that officially opened the 2,550 square foot beauty destination.
A Beauty Playground with Exclusive Brands
The new Belfast location has been promoted as a comprehensive beauty playground offering both makeup services and an extensive range of products. Most significantly, it introduces several internet-viral brands to Irish consumers for the very first time, brands that were previously exclusively available through Sephora.
Among the exclusive offerings now accessible to Irish shoppers are Hailey Bieber's rhode skincare line, Lady Gaga's Haus Labs cosmetics, Makeup By Mario, Merit Beauty, INNBeauty Project, and Tower 28. This represents a substantial expansion of beauty product availability for consumers across Ireland who previously had limited access to these popular brands.
Retail and Business Leaders Hail Transformative Investment
Glyn Roberts, Chief Executive of Retail NI, emphasized the significance of Sephora choosing Belfast for its first Irish store, describing it as "fantastic investment" that will benefit the entire city centre. "This is the first store on the island and Scotland, so it will quickly become a destination retailer," Roberts explained. "All the traders in the city centre are going to benefit from the extra footfall that this store is going to generate."
Roberts further noted the symbolic importance of the opening amid challenging times for high streets: "We've had so many bad headlines about stores closing, it's actually really good to be here this morning at a store opening. It shows there is light at the end of the tunnel for the challenges that our high streets face."
Clare Guinness, Chief Executive of the Belfast Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the competitive achievement of securing Sephora before Dublin. "It's such a coup to get this over Dublin," Guinness stated. "We are the second city on the island but we're the first to have Sephora. I think it's going to fly in Belfast." She also noted the store's cross-generational appeal, attracting both middle-aged consumers and younger demographics like her 13-year-old daughter.
Strategic Expansion and Future Possibilities
Sarah Boyd, Managing Director of Sephora UK, revealed that the Belfast opening represented two and a half years of planning and preparation. "We're beyond excited to be here, and we have the most incredible team all hired locally," Boyd commented.
When asked about the decision to select Belfast for this landmark opening, Boyd explained that the company sought "vibrant beauty communities that are maybe a little under-served." Belfast emerged early in the selection process due to overwhelming public demand, with numerous requests from residents asking Sephora to come to Northern Ireland and Ireland generally.
"As soon as I visited a couple of years ago, I knew that it was going to be a great home for us here," Boyd added, hinting at potential further expansion on the island if the Belfast store performs as expected. "At the moment all of the other stores opening this year are all either in England or Scotland, but if the response here is overwhelming, then of course we'll be looking at more locations."
Sephora UK confirmed that Belfast represents the first of several store openings planned for 2026, with a Bristol location scheduled to open later this spring. The successful Belfast launch suggests promising prospects for both the beauty retailer and the Northern Irish capital's evolving retail landscape.
