Beauty enthusiasts and retail analysts have enthusiastically welcomed the debut of the inaugural Sephora store on the island of Ireland, describing it as a "fantastic" development for the region. The opening took place in Belfast's Victoria Square shopping complex, where eager customers formed lengthy queues hours before the store's scheduled 1pm launch on Thursday, 12 February 2026.
A Major Retail Milestone for Belfast and Beyond
This launch represents Sephora's first new store opening in the United Kingdom for the year 2026, expanding its presence to a total of 13 locations across the UK. The Belfast outlet spans an impressive 2,550 square feet and is being promoted as a comprehensive beauty destination, offering not only a wide array of products but also professional make-up services to enhance the shopping experience.
Exclusive Brands and Viral Favourites
Significantly, the store introduces several internet-famous beauty brands to the island of Ireland for the very first time, brands that are exclusively available through Sephora. These highly anticipated labels include Hailey Bieber's rhode skincare line, Lady Gaga's Haus Labs cosmetics, Makeup By Mario, Merit Beauty, INNBeauty Project, and Tower 28, generating considerable excitement among local beauty communities.
Strategic Expansion and Economic Impact
Sephora UK has confirmed that the Belfast location is merely the first of multiple store openings planned for 2026, with a site in Bristol slated to open later in the spring. Glyn Roberts, Chief Executive of Retail NI, emphasised the positive implications for Belfast's city centre, noting that Sephora will function as a destination retailer, drawing shoppers from across Northern Ireland and potentially beyond.
"It's a fantastic investment, not only for Victoria Square and the city centre but also as the first store on the island and in Scotland, meaning it will rapidly become a must-visit retail destination," Roberts stated. "All city centre traders will benefit from the increased footfall this store will generate, making this a genuine good news story amidst numerous store closures. It demonstrates there is light at the end of the tunnel for our high streets' challenges."
A Competitive Coup for Belfast
Clare Guinness, Chief Executive of the Belfast Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the significance of securing the first Sephora on the island over Dublin, calling it a notable achievement. "It's terrific to have Sephora in Belfast; we're delighted to welcome this global brand, which we previously could only visit while on holiday," she remarked. "It has cross-generational appeal, exciting both middle-aged consumers and younger generations alike. Being the second city on the island but the first to host Sephora is a real coup, and we believe it will thrive here."
Future Prospects and Community Response
Sarah Boyd, Managing Director of Sephora UK, revealed that the Belfast store opening has been in development for two and a half years. She hinted at the possibility of additional store openings on the island if the Belfast location meets the company's high expectations for success.
"We're beyond excited to be here, with an incredible team hired locally," Boyd said. "Belfast emerged early in our process as a city with a vibrant, yet somewhat underserved, beauty community. We received overwhelming requests from people urging us to come to Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Ireland broadly. While current 2026 openings are in England or Scotland, an overwhelming response here could lead us to explore more locations."
The opening not only marks a significant retail expansion but also signals a potential revitalisation for Belfast's commercial landscape, offering hope and economic stimulus in an often challenging retail environment.
