Nicola Roy, a multimedia content creator, tested three different cheddar cheeses from Sainsbury's to determine which offers the best value for money. The cheeses ranged from organic at £3.50 to budget at £2.49, and the results were surprising.
Organic Mature Cheddar - £3.50
The most expensive option, Sainsbury's organic mature cheddar, cost £3.50 for a 270g block. Made by Wyke Farms in Somerset using British organic milk, it had a pleasantly sharp aroma and was not rubbery. The taste was creamy with a satisfying tang and no nasty aftertaste. However, it was slightly dry and lacked a bit of flavour. Roy rated it 3.5 out of 5.
Standard Mature British Cheddar - £2.50
The mid-range option, priced at £2.50 for a 220g block, was Roy's least favourite. It had a bitter aftertaste and lacked balance between tanginess and creaminess. While it might work well in cooking, it was not enjoyable on its own. Roy gave it a rating of 3 out of 5.
Budget Stamford Street Cheddar - £2.49
The cheapest option, Stamford Street cheddar, cost £2.49 for a block that weighed almost twice as much as the mid-range option. It cut into clean slices, was creamy, and had a satisfying sharpness without being rubbery or artificial. Roy rated it 5 out of 5, calling it her clear favourite and the one she would recommend.
In conclusion, the budget cheddar outperformed both the organic and standard options in taste and value, proving that price does not always reflect quality.
