As the UK swelters through a heatwave, criminals are setting up fake websites impersonating retailers like Aldi to scam shoppers desperate for air conditioning units. With stocks running low in stores, fraudsters hope that buyers will act quickly and overlook red flags.
Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky uncovered one such sophisticated replica of Aldi's site, offering steep discounts on portable air coolers. One listing advertised an "energy efficient" air conditioner and heater set for £28.13, down from £64.44, with a warning that only five were left in stock. Another promoted a “3-in-1” portable air conditioner for £149.99, claiming a down from price of £474.99, with just 11 units remaining.
Olga Altukhova of Kaspersky explained that criminals use pressure tactics—such as limited-time offers and low stock alerts—to compel users to enter financial details. “When demand spikes, warnings that only a few items are left or that a discount is about to expire can easily compel users to enter financial details or personal data,” she said.
The fake site uses the Aldi logo and real product images to appear legitimate, and often displays visitor counters and countdown timers. Aldi stated that genuine offers are only available through its official site and social media accounts, and that it works to identify and report fraudulent websites.
Kaspersky advises shoppers to stay calm, verify the website's URL and design, and search for the retailer through a search engine rather than clicking links in emails. If you have given out financial details, contact your bank immediately, report the fraud, and change your passwords.
