A new independent cafe has opened at Newcastle Central Station. Platform 13 welcomed its first customers on Friday morning, opening early to greet commuters arriving on a hot summer day.
The cafe is located in the station’s glazed portico entrance, making use of natural light and an open seating arrangement. It serves a selection of hot drinks and snacks for travellers passing through.
Name inspired by station’s 12 platforms
Jonny Caisley, one of the owners, explained the name’s origin. With 12 platforms at Central Station, “we decided to be the 13th as it fits in with the station.”
While no trains depart from Platform 13, the cafe aims to attract both locals and station staff. Its first day saw tables full, as it competes with chains like Costa, Greggs, and Cafe Nero.
Bright future ahead
Caisley expressed optimism after the busy opening. “We have had a great first day, it's been really busy with lots of people asking questions and giving some great feedback.”
He added, “We're looking forward to a bright future and growing our business into a successful venture.”
