An M&S bakery Surprise Bag bought through the Too Good To Go app for £3.80 contained six items with a total retail value of £12.25, saving the buyer £8.45.
The bag, collected from a local M&S Food store between 8pm and 9pm, included a Tiger Baguette, a Ciabatta Loaf, a Raspberry and Madagascan Custard Tear Drop, a Pain Au Chocolat, a Birthday Yumnut and a Chunked N' Loaded Pistachio Cookie.
What was inside the bag
The Tiger Baguette retails for £1.60 and is baked fresh in store on the day, while the Ciabatta Loaf is worth £2.40. The Raspberry and Madagascan Custard Tear Drop is worth £2.80, and the Pain Au Chocolat would normally cost £1.40.
The Birthday Yumnut, priced at £1.95 at full price, was described by the writer as their favourite M&S bakery treat. The Chunked N' Loaded Pistachio Cookie, which retails for £2.10, went viral earlier this year.
Was it worth the £3.80
The writer said the bag offered a good mix of bread and sweet treats, rather than feeling like leftover items thrown together. The contents lasted over several days, despite being a surplus food bag intended to help prevent waste.
The contents vary depending on what is left in each store, so there is no guarantee of receiving the same items. The main downside noted was the collection time between 8pm and 9pm on a cold, dark night.
M&S food waste pledge
M&S has pledged to halve food waste by 2030 and recently announced it had helped redistribute more than 57,000 tonnes of surplus food, equivalent to over 130 million meals donated to charities. Too Good To Go connects customers with businesses that have surplus food available to rescue through its app.
The bags are available at more than 350 M&S Food stores across the UK and Ireland, with every bag containing at least £10.20 worth of food. The writer concluded they would buy the bag again, saying it was well worth trying for anyone living near a participating store who does not mind collecting food towards the end of the day.
