A mother-of-two has opened a nature-themed play cafe in Northumberland, drawing significant community support. Beth Larby launched The Willow Bean Play Cafe on Market Street in Bedlington last month, welcoming up to 1,400 visitors since opening on 6 July.
A Personal Venture
The 31-year-old, who previously worked in occupational therapy, decided to set up the business after having her two children, Frankie, four, and Reggie, two. Beth, who lives in Cramlington, said the cafe is as much for adults as it is for children.
"At one point I had two children under two. When I had the children, getting out into play cafes really helped me. I met new mam friends who I am still friends with now. I think it's really quite important for new parents," she said.
Design and Offerings
The cafe features a 'Baby Nest' for pre-walkers and children aged 0-12 months, a 'Toddler Explorers' play zone for walkers and children aged one to five, and a 'Cloud Lounge' reading nook with acoustic felt, offering a low stimulation space for calm play.
The menu includes locally sourced barista-quality coffee, lunches, snacks, and sweet treats for both adults and children. Beth said she tries to ensure all her suppliers are other local businesses.
Community Response
Beth said the business has received an incredible amount of support since opening. She hopes to put on events, such as mam get togethers, to help people make friends in the future.
"Opening a business can be quite daunting. Although it's scary, I would have regretted not giving this a go," she said. "We have had a baby a week old in with their parents so their parents could get out and have a coffee. The community has been so supportive over the space. I couldn't ask for much more really."
