Mother Hubbard's to Open in Newcastle

Mother Hubbard's, a fish and chip restaurant that declares itself to be the 'most famous chippy' in the UK, is set to open a branch in Newcastle city centre. Signs announcing its arrival have gone up on a building in a prime location on Clayton Street, right next to the NX music venue and just a few minutes' walk from Central Station.

History of Mother Hubbard's

The first Mother Hubbard's opened in 1972 in Bradford, with then Coronation Street stars Bernard Youens and Jean Alexander, who played Stan and Hilda Ogden, doing the honours. Since then, the brand has established itself as a food and drink legend in West Yorkshire. Currently, there are shops in Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Batley, and Leeds. The company has also expanded to other UK locations including Oldham, Shrewsbury, Dundee, Worcester, and Watford.

Awards and Recognition

Mother Hubbard's took home the title of Chippy of the Year in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The Newcastle branch marks the first time the brand has expanded to Tyneside.

While an opening date has yet to be revealed, the Newcastle premises already features windows adorned with newspaper front pages from over the years. A teaser on the Mother Hubbard's website reads: "With a new sleek contemporary look, friendly staff and with our 40 years of experience in the business, you are sure to be served the finest traditional Fish and Chips and be one of our thousands of delighted customers."

Prices have changed since the first Mother Hubbard's opened 54 years ago, when a portion of chips cost 45p, but the love for their food remains strong.
