A historic lighthouse in Michigan's scenic Peninsula Township may soon begin a new chapter as a winery after a protracted legal battle over its sale.
The local government has finally reached an agreement to sell the iconic structure to a private developer with plans to convert it into a vineyard and tasting facility. The deal comes after years of disputes between preservationists hoping to maintain public access and officials seeking to offload the costly property.
Years of Legal Wrangling
The lighthouse, which has guided ships along Lake Michigan for over a century, became the center of controversy when township officials first proposed selling it in 2019. Preservation groups filed multiple lawsuits arguing the sale would violate public trust doctrines protecting shoreline landmarks.
"This lighthouse represents an important piece of our maritime heritage," said one opponent of the sale. "Converting it into a commercial enterprise sets a dangerous precedent for other historic properties."
New Life for Old Landmark
The winning bidder, a local winery owner, has promised to preserve the structure's exterior while adapting the interior for wine production and tourism. Plans include:
- Maintaining public access to the lighthouse grounds
- Creating a small museum about the site's history
- Developing vineyard plots on surrounding land
- Building a tasting room with lake views
"We want to honor the building's past while giving it new purpose," the developer told reporters. "This will become a destination that celebrates both Michigan's maritime history and its growing wine industry."
Economic Boost Expected
Local officials estimate the project could bring 50 new jobs to the area and significantly increase tourism revenue. The winery plans to source grapes from regional growers, providing an additional market for Michigan's agricultural sector.
The sale is expected to close within 60 days, with renovations beginning next spring. While some community members remain opposed, many are embracing the compromise that preserves the landmark while creating new economic opportunities.
